British Airways cabin crew member sacked after £23,000 went missing from a NIGERIAN in First Class cabin

  • Ian McClure, 42, sacked despite no evidence of theft brought by police
  • BA's internal probe branded 'biased and inadequate' by lawyer
  • Airline defends its decision to sack attendant after 18 years of service

  • Ian McClure a British Airways flight attendant, was accused of stealing £23,000 in cash from an unlocked briefcase and given the sack despite a lack of evidence
A British Airways steward has been sacked after £23,000 went missing from a passenger's briefcase, despite a failure to bring charges against him for the theft.
Ian McClure, 42, a flight attendant of eighteen years, is now challenging his dismissal. A tribunal has heard that BA's internal staff investigation was found to be 'biased and inadequate'.
The incident is alleged to have occurred on a five-and-a-half hour overnight flight from Nigeria to Heathrow in London on April 10, 2011.
A First Class passenger who had been carrying £65,000 in a briefcase secured in his overhead locker complained that £23,000 had gone missing mid-flight. The First Class cabin was almost full with 11 of the 14 seats taken.
Five days after the flight Mr McClure was arrested by police at his home Buckinghamshire. Officers found quantities of notes in £50s and £20s with similar markings to those belonging to the BA customer.
However, detectives could not match the notes with those in the original briefcase and they eventually dropped the charges against Mr McClure.
BA's own procedures ended in the dismissal of Mr McClure, ignoring the results of a police investigation. The decision is now being challenged at an employment tribunal in Reading.
Mr McClure's barrister, Angus Gloag, told the hearing that BA's internal investigation l was 'biased and inadequate

'It's a question of who done it? That's if the money ever existed in the first place,' Mr Gloag said.
'Mr McClure had travelled to Nigeria a couple of weeks before this flight so he had access to money of this type with these markings.
'These are similar markings, not unique.'
Harveen Gupta who carried out the British Airways investigation defended the decision to sack Mr McClure
Harveen Gupta who carried out the British Airways investigation defended the decision to sack Mr McClure
Mr Gloag claimed that it would have been impossible for Mr McClure to have broken into an overhead locker and removed money from a secure briefcase, given that the First Class cabin had been nearly full and silent.
'Could he really have opened an overhead locker generating noise- and noise is at a premium in First Class - taken the briefcase out, taken it to the toilet, got money out, secreted it on himself or hid it somewhere and put the case back in the locker without anyone seeing anything?
'He had spent a significant amount of time with a nervous customer sitting in 4E.'
Harveen Gupta, an inflight business manager for BA, who carried out the internal inquiry defended the company's investigation.
She said: 'I took the hearing very seriously.
'It took a long time to do this. I believe I gave a very fair hearing.'
Ms Gupta admitted her inquiry was stopped while the police investigation took over.
The court asked her to explain her decision to sack Mr McClure despite no evidence found by police against the flight attendant.
Ms Gupta said: 'The explanation given to me by Mr McClure was that the money had come from a UK Bank Society.
'The markings were similar to that described by the customer.
    'I found that strange.'
The tribunal, held before Judge Andrew Gumbiti-Zimuto, continues.

Husband, wife, three others arrested for pipeline vandalism

Husband and wife and others surviving from the failure of a system to provide adequate security to government properties, It was indeed a show of shame Yesterday as they pleaded with men of the civil defense corps for leniency, Mr. John Gere, and his wife, Queen Gere, and three others
Reports from Punch says“They were arrested in Epe and that they even attacked some of the officers who went for the raid. According to Mr. Evans Ewurum, the deputy commandant of the civil defense who said, “We recovered from them more than 20 kegs of petrol. They will be charged to court and the exhibit will be handed over to either the police, court or Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation as the case may be,” he said. The suspects, however, denied being pipeline vandals, saying that they were arrested unjustly by overzealous NSCDC operatives. One of the suspects, Favour Egboh, said, “I live at Temu Village, Epe and I buy diesel from trailers. The trailers I buy diesel from do not have company names written on them. I went into this business because of my condition.

“I have three children and no husband. I’m presently suffering from diabetes and I have my medicine here with me. I went to buy my medicine from a chemist nearby and they arrested me on my way back.”

Asked how much she sold diesel, she said, “I buy it at the rate of N3,500 for 30 litres and sell it for N4,000 naira or N3,750. I buy 50 litres for N7,000 and sell for N7,500. I use the money I get from my business to take care of my three children.

Queen however denied complicity, saying that she was arrested by the operatives when she came to secure Egboh’s release.

“I don’t sell diesel. I sell spirits and I don’t even live in Epe. My sister (Egboh) sells diesel. I went to plead that she should be released and they arrested me too,” she said.

Queen’s husband corroborated her story, saying he was also arrested after his wife called him to secure her release. He said he was not a pipeline vandal and urged the operatives to release him.

He said, “I stay at Ishala. I sell spirits. I went to buy a large quantity of spirits in a drum when my wife called me that her sister was arrested. I rushed down to the place. My wife said she came out and met with the civil defence officials and they arrested her. They asked if I was the husband and they arrested me when I said ‘yes.’

“My vehicle was attacked by armed robbers on Wednesday and my boys that were in it were injured. I have not even found the vehicle and these people have come to inflict on me more pains.”

Meanwhile, the DCG in charge of operations as well as other senior officers, visited Arepo area of Ogun State on Tuesday where a pipeline explosion occurred, killing scores.

Ewurum described the incident as suicide and urged members of the public to continue to provide the corps with information that could lead to more arrests.

The corps boss also gave vandals a seven-day grace to vacate the area or face the wrath of the law.

“I give oil pipeline vandals seven days to evacuate the area and relocate to another country or else they will face fire. We will comb the area and descend upon them without mercy,” he said.

Ewurum added that the corps needed a helicopter to carry out more surveillance as this would go a long way in aiding their job.

Governor of Anambra State Peter Obi promises N5 Million for Information on Bodies Found in Ezu River

The governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi, has promised N5 Million to anyone with information on the bodies found in Ezu River, Amansea, Akwa North Local Government area of the state.
On Saturday over 15 bodies were found floating on the river situated at the boundary between Enugu and Anambra States. The corpses that could not be easily identified were suspected to have been dumped in the river on Friday night by unknown persons.
Natives of Amansea said some of the bodies they saw had been swept away while some were still buried down the river and are expected to become afloat later.
Obi, who was away to the United Kingdom on official duty at the time of the discovery of the dead bodies, cut short his trip after being briefed by his aides on the mysterious development.
According to Vanguard, he said the corpses obviously floated from elsewhere into Anambra state. “The fact that River Ezu flows into Anambra State from another state shows that these corpses obviously floated from elsewhere into our state. As you can see, the bodies are already decomposing and this shows that this incident happened some time ago. But I do not care where the corpses floated from; I am worried that this type of scenario could be witnessed in our country in this age and time. This is a most barbaric and unacceptable development. It cannot happen in any decent society.”
He explained that the N5 million would go to anyone who provided necessary information which would help to unravel the circumstances surrounding the strange incident.
